For the first time, French & Jupps Maltings, Great Britain's oldest maltster, is opening its doors to the public. We're excited to welcome residents of Stanstead Abbotts, Ware, Hertford, and residents of Hertfordshire, and the surrounding areas to tour our historic facility and learn about the intricate process of malting, a craft we've been perfecting since 1689.
Roasted Malts French & Jupps

We believe it’s important to share and educate in the journey of how we have been transforming barley into roasted malt for over 300 years, a key ingredient in brewing and whisky. The tours will provide a firsthand look at each stage of the malting process, from steeping and germination to roasting and kilning. Gain first hand experience to see how we create our range of 14 handcrafted Roasted Crystal Malts and Roasted Patent Malts, each with a unique character and purpose.

"Thanks for arranging a really interesting talk and tour. We really enjoyed it!"

Tours begin with a presentation where we’ll delve into the history of French & Jupps, explaining our unique family history, heritage, and the process behind malting, in addition to our long-standing relationships with local farmers who supply the barley we use within a 30-mile radius of our maltings. Learn why these partnerships are essential to our operations and our commitment to supporting the regional economy, as well as our sustainability initiatives, and how we give back to our community through sponsorships and support for local youth initiatives and infrastructure projects, including the canal ways and railways.

You’ll then be taken by guide you through our working Maltings facility, giving you the chance to speak directly with our experienced maltsters, lab technicians, and operators, sharing insights into their specialised roles and the dedication it takes to maintain our long-standing traditions. All attendees will leave with a beer crafted using our malts, merchandise and a brewers handbook on our range of handcrafted roasted malts.
